"Many times when
I design a knife, the final product is not exactly as I imagined it in the first place.
That's the way I actually plan it
that is, I use a design as a spring board, and of
course the more you work with the materials, the more THEY dictate to you the direction
your knife takes. I'm sure that's true of any art form.
What's special about "The
Lady Finger" is that even before I found this naturally harvested stag horn, I had
this very knife in mind. I have been going to Hawaii now for several years to live, rest,
be inspired, and work on both my knives and my sculptures. When I first came to the
Islands it was at Tom Selleck's invitation to be a part of, and make trophy knives for,
the Hawaiian Pacific Shoot, of which Selleck was an honorary chairman.
Once I stepped off the plane
(it was my very first visit ever to the Islands), I was immediately taken not only by the
obvious tropical beauty, but by that wondrous continuous breeze, that felt to me anyway,
like a woman's delicate fingers tickling the back of my neck. Not an unpleasant feeling to
say the least! The idea of this knife came to mind right away. It was a way to celebrate
both the magic of the island and its breezes, but of a woman's touch.
It somehow also inspired me to
create this unique Zebra-layering in the spacer which echo's the amazing zebra like
stripes of the native Hawaiian stag horn. This is truly a special knife! |
