"Because of the graceful flowing trailing point shape
of the blade, one would think I called this knife The Amazonian for the famous
South American River. Actually, the concept for this knife came to me from something I had
read as a child, and has always fascinated me to this day. Its the wonderful story
from Greek Mythology of the Amazon Women.
I
especially loved the fact that the
Amazons would rush off at the drop of a hat to have sexual relations with men of
neighboring states, sometimes for weeks or months at a time! Combined that with the fact
that they were magnificent archers and warriors, you can see how they sparked the
imagination of a young boy (and hell, they still do a bit of sparking today!).
When I found this amazing piece of fossilized walrus, I noticed that one side was
naturally round and smooth, and the other side was naturally convex and darker in color.
It
immediately reminded me of the story of the Amazon Women, especially the fact that they were trained as archers for war, and the custom of
burning off the right breast was practiced to facilitate bending the bowhence the
name Amazon, derived from the Greek word for breastless.
It
is in their honor, and the honor of all the adventures they conjured up for me
in my youth, that I have created this very unique and powerfully beautiful knife. |
