Everything listed on our site is unconditionally guaranteed. If you are not satisfied with your purchase, please notify us within 30 days of receipt of your merchandise, and we will gladly exchange, credit, or refund the cost of the item excluding shipping, insurance and handling charges. (This return policy excludes certain items or types of orders -- please see special refund conditions for custom or other special order items). We cannot reimburse shipping and handling charges, so please be aware that the shipping, handling and insurance charges will be deducted from your full invoiced price. If you are purchasing a product that has "Free Shipping" our actual shipping charges to you will be deducted from your return refund. These deductions includes charges from shipping companies who return undelivered or unopened items. As part of our policy, you agree to send back to us any items with a DELIVERY CONFIRMATION, via USPS, UPS or FEDEX, along with proper INSURANCE (simply factor the price of the original shipping charges) at your expense. We can not be responsible for any merchandise that is return to us without a CONFIRMATION and INSURANCE. We must have "proof of delivery" in order to properly refund an item. Any items returned to us, must include a copy of the original invoice or packing slip. Please retain your original invoice or packing slip, since you may need it for your records! 

We adhere to the terms and conditions as set forth in your banking or other credit card or checking policies with regards to "assumption of responsibility" as to the purchaser. If, for example we receive an order and the invoiced item clears and is processed, this constitutes a legal and binding transaction. We assume that the person who is purchasing the item is the person who has requested it. Therefore said order is not refundable solely because there is a claim that the credit card holder did not personally authorize it. Cases of stolen cards or credit card fraud must be handled as is procedure with your banking institution.


Stapel Knives offers our “Lifetime Guarantee” on specific custom-hand-made-to-order knives, and other knives and merchandise specifically noted to have our “Lifetime Guarantee” Warranty in their order descriptions. A signed copy of this guarantee will be included with your order of qualified knives, collectables, and/or merchandise.

Shipping costs to Stapel Knives is the responsibility of the recipient, and they agree to send the knife with Delivery Confirmation via USPS, UPS or FEDEX, along with the appropriate Insurance (simply figure in the original purchase price of the item). Stapel Knives will send you back your repaired or replaced knife, and pay all shipping, confirmation and insurance costs back to you. 

The return policy also adheres to additional special instructions that may be provided with your knife, and with all rules, regulations and policies of knife care that are considered standard in the industry. Abuse of these rules may constitute a voiding of our warranties, guarantees, and return policies. These abuses shall include, but not be limited to, alteration of the knife, unauthorized sharpening, either personally or professional, of said item, or use of unauthorized solvents or solutions, acts of God; or from improper storage or handling. In cases where abuse is observed, Stapel Knives shall determined the amount of repair required, and how much they are responsible for, and shall contact you before doing said repairs. These decisions are solely based on these rules, and on the decisions and discretion of Stapel Knives of California. All decisions are final.


The return policy also adheres to the rules as described in additional special instructions that may be provided with your knife, and with all rules, regulations and policies of knife care that are considered standard in the industry. Abuse of these rules may constitute a voiding of our warranties, guarantees, and return policies. These decisions are solely based on these rules, and on the decisions and discretion of Stapel Knives. All decisions are final.

All returned products must be in original condition and packaging; otherwise, additional charges may be applied. 

IMPORTANT: On specific returns, in which a customer has given us wrong information (including, but not limited to a wrong knife size, description, etc., ; or the customer is disputing the order), and the customer does not want the item repaired, replaced, or exchanged for another item, but rather only a refund (presuming their request adheres to our "Return Policy" requirements), there will be a 20% Restocking Fee and a 15% Reprocessing Fee, which is deducted from your original purchase price. It is solely the discretion of Stapel Knives, as to when this Restocking Fee shall apply and their decision is final.

Please read all knife specification information on your invoice carefully. If you give us a specific knife description and once you receive the knife, you find the knife is not as described, we will be happy to change the knife, however there will be a charge for both the labor and shipping. If, of course, the knife was made in the wrong specifications and the error was ours, we will fix your knife at no charge.

Please be aware that unless specifically noted, custom knives, and other special knives take between six to eight months to create. Shipping options (i.e.: UPS Ground; Two Day; One Day Overnight, etc.) refer to shipping after the knife is completed. 

Unfortunately, we cannot accept refunds for merchandise that has been specially ordered, or is custom hand-made-to-order. Additionally, a small number of products are non-returnable, either due to their custom nature or because they are special order items. If you have any questions about whether a product is returnable, please call us in advance of ordering. However, you may return these items as many times as you want to have them adjusted until such time as you are satisfied with the fit. 

As noted in the custom knife payment request form: "By placing this order for a custom knife, (and by including the description and your special order number) you accept and agree abide by all the terms and conditions as set forth on (please see our customer service section for specific details) in reference to purchasing a Stapel Knife, including, but not limited to our return policies, warranties, exclusions, and conditions." 

Although we do not give refunds on special or custom order items, furthermore, please understand that we do our best to have your order to you when it is promised. However, because of the unique nature of our items, especially in regards to, but not limited to, custom knife orders, there are many factors outside our control, that can cause your order to be delayed. We will make every effort to keep you informed as to a running status of your order, and/or any delays that may occur; and of course you are more than welcome to contact us via phone or e-mail (please refer to our "contact information"). However, the delay of an item for reasons outside our control (including, but not limited to, acts of God, special material delays, re-do's of orders, material exchanges, shipping delays, equipment failure, health factors, etc.) can not constitute a default, and a void of said order. You will receive your order in as timely as fashion as we are humanly able to, and as long as the item is in the process of being created, the order of said item shall be active.


As part of our 100% Satisfaction Guarantee, if any knife needs to be “retooled”, you can return it, and we will adjust it until you are satisfied. We will pay any shipping charges back to you, but again, you must pay the shipping charges to our Studio along with the Confirmation and Insurance provisions as set forth  in our "Return Policy".  If our Quality Control Department determines that the merchandise has been shipped to you in any form other than “perfect”, or that there is any “flaw” in the workmanship or materials, then we shall also credit you for your shipping charges.

If Product Arrives Damaged 

Our products are well-packaged to withstand damage during shipping. We refuse to carry products that are easily damaged during shipping. But if an item looks damaged or parts are missing when they arrive to you, please notify us immediately. (Please see the "Contact Us" section for specific information)

To Return a Product

Wrap the package carefully. All returned products must be in original condition and packaging; otherwise, additional charges may be applied.

Please save your return tracking number, and email it to us (or call or fax us with the information), so that we can track the return. Once again, please note that it is important that you save the tracking number and that you insure the return package in case there are any issues during transit. 

Please Note: unless the return or exchange is due to an error on our part, we cannot refund shipping and handling, and we cannot pay for your return shipping charges. We will issue a credit to the credit card used for the original purchase. With all our refunds, if you've paid by PAY PAL, then your PAY PAL account will be credited back (however sometimes the "credit back" feature on PAY PAL doesn't work, at which case we will issue you a refund check). If you have paid by check, money order, or cashier's check, we will refund you via a refund check, after the initial money's have cleared our account.

Gift Returns 

If you had received your merchandise as a gift, you may return your gift for any reason within 30 days of order receipt for online-store credit. The amount of credit will follow the same rules as our return policy. Please contact Customer Service ( We will need your email address to process your credit. 

All returned gift products must be in original condition and packaging; otherwise, additional charges may be applied.


Stapel Knives is committed to shipping your knife to you as quickly and safely as possible. Therefore sometimes because of factors beyond our control we must change delivery services from the one requested to one that will insure that you receive your knife in a timely manner and in mint condition.  For Overnight and 2-Day Shipping -- Please note that all airfreight carriers reserve the right to extend delivery time by 24 hours for residential deliveries. This is beyond our control and airfreight charges cannot be refunded for this reason.   Your shipping charge is listed in your shopping cart. When you select an item to add to our “Shopping Cart”, you will first be prompted to a shipping page which will ask you for your zip code or “country” code in order to properly calculate your shipping charges. Below that is a “drop down” menu that gives you specific options for shipping. Please note that it is “defaulted” on “UPS Ground” (all our orders are shipped via UPS only). If you want your item shipped faster, you can hit the “down arrow”, and select several other faster UPS shipping methods. Of course, please note that these options are more expensive than “Ground Shipping”. For INTERNATIONAL ORDERS, we also provide several additional options utilizing USPS, which, depending on where they are going, may offer cheaper shipping charges. You will be able to see your shipping and handling charges when you go to your shopping cart before you actually submit your order to us for processing. Please be aware that there is an option on the right hand section of our Shopping Cart that allows you to go back and change your shipping options. You can do this as many times as you want, until you are satisfied with the price of your shipping. As with the regular shipping instructions, if you are shipping to any other area other than the United States (all Fifty States), you must use the “drop down” menu to select your proper UPS International Shipping Options. For INTERNATIONAL ORDERS, we also provide several additional options utilizing USPS, which, depending on where they are going, may offer cheaper shipping charges. Be aware that there are several areas we are not allowed, by law, bank restrictions, or by UPS provisions to ship to. If we discover that your shipping address falls in one of these prohibitive shipping situations, we will notify you immediately via e-mail, to make arrangements to either find a different shipping method, address, or payment option, or if none are available to your satisfaction, we will void your order, or credit back your account. Please understand that many countries will not allow knives to be sent. We will let you know if this is a problem before we process the order and if there is a restriction to your address, we will give you the option of voiding the order or arranging for the knife to be delivered to a country that will allow such merchandise.


On our “shopping cart” you will see exactly the amount we have charged for our mandatory insurance. This is automatically factored in depending on the item(s) you have order, and can not be changed or deleted.


A special “handling” charge is also added to your order, depending on the type of merchandise you have ordered. This nominal charge is automatically added to your shipping charge. OUR UNPARALLELED PACKING IS INCLUDED FREE OF CHARGE AS PART OF YOUR KNIFE PURCHASE. Stapel Knives takes enormous pride in the quality and craftsmanship of their knives, and have for over three decades worked like the dickens to create a “legendary” reputation. And our knives go through a hyper scrupulous, and some say, slightly insane inspection and re-inspection before we will let a “Stapel Knife” leave the shop on its way to your awaiting head. 


All orders automatically receive a special UPS e-mail once your order is shipped. This will be sent to the e-mail address you provide, so make sure you give us a current, and active e-mail address. In the e-mail, you will receive your special tracking number, and a link to the UPS site to check out the progress of your shipment. Your UPS confirmation e-mail will come to you from: If you see this address in your e-mail box please be aware that this is from UPS and is not spam!



Many new servers (i.e. AOL), now have sophisticated Spam Filters to keep those annoying mass mailing e-mail ads off your address. Unfortunately, sometimes the filters are a little too “efficient”, and they dump legit e-mails into your Spam Folder, so that you never see them. If you are excepting an e-mail from us, or do not receive your order confirmation, or UPS delivery tracking e-mail, (which will come to you as: please check your “Spam dump folder”. If you find our e-mails in there, you can highlight that specific e-mail, then click: “THIS IS NOT SPAM”, and your filter should allow our correspondence to show up in your regular mail in the future.


Because of the special nature of Stapel Knives merchandise, we do not ship to multiple addresses, since tracking and reliability drops with each additional shipping location. Therefore, only one “shipping address” is provided. If you are ordering multiple items for various people, please understand that we’d rather you receive all your times delivered to one location, and in a timely manner (and that you get them at all!), and in good condition. Once you’ve received your order, you can distribute them to the lucky parties! If you are shipping your item as a gift to only one recipient, you can use their name and address in the “shipping address” portion of our Shopping Cart, and the item(s) will be shipped directly there.

Payment Options


We accept MasterCard, Visa, American Express and Discover Credit Cards, along with PAY PAL, gift certificates, personal and business checks, money orders, and cashier's checks (in U.S. dollars and drawn on a U.S. bank). We do not accept purchase orders. As with all retailers, if you do pay by personal or business check, please be aware that your order will be slightly delayed, since we can not processed your order until such time as we receive confirmation from our bank that said check has been cleared and deposited to our account. 

All Stapel Knives products and services are priced in U.S. dollars. 

Our systems are very secure, and all customer information is kept private. Please read our security and privacy policies for more information. 

Orders can only be placed on-line, through our secure credit card server, or through mail or fax. Please see your options when checking out in our SHOPPING CART. We do not accept phone orders at this time. 


If you opt to use our "FlexPay Plan", at the time of purchase, we will bill your credit card for the first monthly installment, including applicable sales tax*, shipping, handling and insurance fees. The remaining balance is then automatically billed to your credit card in two additional equal monthly installments*. As with all our purchases, your credit card debit amount will be billed from GNOME TREE ENTERPRISES.

FlexPay is good only for credit card orders (Visa, MasterCard, American Express/Optima and Discover). It can not be used for PayPal, or check or money order purchases.

If your credit card payments are rejected by the bank or there are other negative credit issues that come to your attention, Stapel Knives and Gnome Tree Enterprises has the right to cancel said order. Any payments that have cleared shall be refunded minus a 15% re-processing fee.

All payments through FlexPay are subject to the same rules and regulations of our regular purchases. By selecting the FlexPay option, you agree to all such terms including by not limited to your agreement to pay the "Guaranteed Full Price" in the three installments. If, at any time, Stapel Knives, Gnome Tree Enterprises, or any of its assignees or affiliates shall be notified of any default in your installments, your bank shall be contacted, and your heretofore agreed upon terms will be communicated, and you agree that Stapel Knives, et. al., shall have all legal rights to obtain any unpaid balance from your bank or other sources deemed necessary. It is understood also that any default on your installment payments shall greatly effect your credit rating, and Stapel Knives, et. al, shall communicate to the proper credit card companies, authorities, etc., any said default.

Please be aware than all checks, money order and/or cashier checks must be made out to GNOME TREE ENTERPRISES (and NOT to “Stapel Knives”). Also please be aware that if you are using a credit card, your charge will show up on your statement as GNOME TREE ENTERPRISES, as will any refund due to you.

For those paying by personal or business check, please note that we can not begin work on your order until your check has cleared our bank. Therefore please add between a week and ten days to our "due date" for your item so that your check will clear.

          INSUFFICIENT FUNDS: If your check is returned to us because of "Insufficient Funds", you will be charged an additional $50 (Fifty Dollars and No Cents). All failures to pay this service charge shall be reported and can greatly effect your credit rating.

          STOPPED PAYMENT: If your check is returned to us because you have arbitrarily "stopped payment" on your check (that is, you have stopped payment without our prior notice and agreement),  you shall be charged an additional $75 (Seventy-Five Dollars and No Cents). All failures to pay this service charge shall be reported and can greatly effect your credit rating.

If you are out of the United States and want to send a money order or cashier’s check, you must send an INTERNATIONAL CASHIER’S CHECK or INTERNATIONAL BANK MONEY ORDER.

You can also use a Stapel  Knife gift certificate. For information on how to use gift certificates please read our "Gift Certificate" section. 

Sales Tax

Items shipped to destinations in the State of California, shall be automatically charged the proper sales tax. This California sales tax charge will automatically show up in your SHOPPING CART. 

Using Discount Coupons or Gift Certificates

During the checkout process you can enter any of our coupons, promotional codes and gift certificates that you would like to use on that order. Please note any restrictions or expiration dates on these coupons, promotional codes, or gift certificates before ordering. 

To redeem a gift certificate, enter the claim code number EXACTLY as found on all gift certificates in the proper “HAVE A GIFT CERTIFICATE?” link at the bottom of our SHOPPING CART. 

You can only redeem one gift certificate per full shopping cart purchase (that is, you can order as many items as you want in one order, and use your gift certificate, but you can not combine any other gift certificates to that specific order). Please note that besides not being able to combine more than one gift certificate to your order, you can not also combine promotional or discount codes to your order if your are using a gift certificate, and concurrently, if you use a discount or promotional code, you can not use a gift certificate. 

To redeem a coupon or promotional code, enter the appropriate code number in the “HAVE A DISCOUNT CODE?” link at the bottom of your shopping cart. Please note that promotional codes and coupons are limited to only one per purchase. 

Order Confirmation

You will receive an "order confirmation" email within 24 hours of placing your order. The email confirmation will list all items in your order and serve as your invoice.

Gift Certificates

Stapel Knives gift certificates can be purchased for various amounts. You can “write in” the actual amount you’d like to spend, and a gift certificate will be “generated” in that amount, along with your personal gift certificate code number. The gift certificates can only be delivered via U.S. mail, (we do not generate e-mail gift certificates). There are no shipping charges for gift certificates. You may personalize the certificate and have it sent directly to the recipient, or you may have it sent to you. Please read "Buying a Gift Certificate" for further details.

You can add a gift message to your order. These cards are delivered with your order either to you, or to the address you supply us in the “shipping address” section of our shopping cart. Use the SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS box to request a gift card, and message. Messages are “cut and paste” from that text box, so make sure to read your message carefully before submitting. Stapel Knives is not responsible for any errors in such messages. We send them "as is" without any editing or correcting. There is no charge for sending gift messages. 

Rules for Gift Certificates

Gift certificates can only be redeemed through our Web site,, toward the purchase of products sold only by Stapel Knives.

Gift certificates cannot be used to pay for gift certificates. 

Gift certificates are not redeemable for cash and cannot be returned for a cash refund. 

If your order exceeds the amount of your gift certificate, you must pay the balance with a credit card or other payment options per your shopping cart instructions.

Gift certificate cash value is 1/10 of one cent. 

Gift certificates and their use on our Web site are subject to our Terms and Conditions of Use. 

Stapel Knives reserves the right to change these terms and conditions from time to time at its discretion. 

Gift certificates and unused portions of gift certificates expire two years from the date of issue.* 

Gift certificates are not transferable.

Stapel Knives is not responsible for lost or stolen gift certificates. 

*Does not apply in any states where prohibited by law.

Corporate Gifts and Corporate Gift Certificates 

At Stapel Knives we offer hundreds of knives, collectable's and other related merchandise. Sometimes the best way to give someone the gift they want is to let them select their own gift. If this flexibility fits you or your company's goal, then our Gift Certificates may be your solution! 

Our Gift Certificates can be personalized with the recipient's name and address, your company's name and a congratulatory message. Certificates are available in any denominations (minimum $25), and can be customized to fit the needs of your program.

If you would like to order mutable gift certificates for personal or business use, simply go to our GIFT CERTIFICATE ORDER PAGE, and fill in an amount (minimum order $25) and then click on the “number of items” drop down. Please supply us with the name of your company, or individual you would like on the certificates in the SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS box in your SHOPPING CART, and you will be mailed your personalized gift certificate. Each certificate will have its own special code to use in ordering.
